Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
