Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Man City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who once served as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, addressed the persistent speculation about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in June 2024, has a contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extra year available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions After Previous Comments
Maresca's latest comments follow after he described a recent two-day spell as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked widespread talk of a potential rift between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had since spoken with the club's leadership, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we talk about different things. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club next season and called on the fans to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca revealed that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, potentially in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the matter in the open, there has also been no apology offered, creating the disagreement unresolved.
The mood during these press conferences has become increasingly awkward, raising fears it could undermine what has up to now been a decent beginning to the season.
Chelsea's sporting position is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the League Cup last four, and can achieve a better European position with good results in their final matches.
